Update 11: Ellfan

Um, Thierry?
Yes, what is it, Elowen? Are you feeling alright?
N-not entirely.
Oh dear. Has the heat from the 2nd Stratum been getting to you?
No, no, I don't...feel feverish.
What's wrong, then? Why do you feel ill?
...Is it possible to be allergic to a specific person?
...I've...certainly never heard of that. What are the symptoms of this specific person allergy, and who is this person?
Well, when I've been around Afon lately, I find that my stomach starts feeling...ticklish. Additionally, I find that blood tends to rush to my face quite often around her.
...Elowen, let's go take a walk.
Why? I-is something-- Did I say something wrong?
No, no, far from it, there are just matters I feel we should discuss while out and about.
There's a few things I have to finish up from the B8F recording, so that's why the party hasn't changed.

Hmm... So you were only able to get one by defeating the Firebird using fire? Interesting. Apparently, this stone is great at bringing out the natural flavors in food. It's a trade secret, I hear. Jackson will be pleased to see this. Nice work.

Fire Rings are pretty eh. 30% fire resistance isn't much.
It's potentially useful for a few edge cases down the road if you're running without a Protector, but there aren't many.

Thierry maxes out CPR, so he can get the 100% chance version when using it in combination with Boost.

Katya's gonna work towards Inferno Formula.

And more Action Boost for Ladette.

Oh, right, bar patrons.

Leggy dark hunter:
Hey... Do you want to hear about a new item? Then, you know the drill, right?
Yeah, yeah. Hey, Valerie, one...uh, One More! Pudding.
The hell does "One More!" mean here?
Having just a bit of deliciousness is one thing, but I'd love to drown in a sea of pudding... Are you confused yet?
No, but I'm slightly concerned.
Speaking of confusing, how about that Firebird? It's very strong against fire! Buuuuuut... if you manage to defeat it with a fire attack, you can get a pretty Carminite. The alchemist in my party worked really hard for me to get this. ...Hm hm hm. He's so sweet!
Already knew that.

Odd-clothed mixer:
Why don't you take a break with me? A good drink between quests... Tastes great, huh?
Don't overdo it, now.
Oh, don't worry. I'm not going to have too much. I'm still on the job, you know. Speaking of which, a lot of people have been asking for a tool to cause ailments. Everybody asks for Nerve Gas, but it takes Venom Barb to make it... If you want me to make some for you, please bring the necessary materials to the shop.
Angry-looking alchemist:
My guild leader is a bit extreme. Fighting today, fighting tomorrow, fighting all the time... And then she tries to defeat the enemies in strange ways, making battles last even longer. I can't fight for another 24 hours! I'm an alchemist, not a gladiator! Those Glowbirds lower our attack and raise their own, just like a certain somebody... Ugh.
...What? No they don't.
I can't tell you how many times I've wished to get put to sleep by a Towering Ooze's Paralysis... ...Just to get some sleep! Oh, but sometimes it's poison, huh? Plus, if everyone's hit, you won't wake up. *sigh* Guess I'm gonna end up fighting tomorrow, too.
Ohhhhhhhh man Towering Oozes. Those are...something that isn't fun.

And the townspeople now have new dialogue.
...Strange, isn't it? It feels like you were the rookies here not too long ago.

Nothing, because we don't stay here.
[How many times do we have to tell him that before he gets it?]
The chicken sautee has been a hit among the guests lately, but chicken isn't readily available at the moment.

It's never a bad idea to be too prepared, if y'take me meaning.

Broadaxe (+59 ATK) is made from 1 Violet Ore (Venom Ooze rare). Costs 1950 en.

Nagawakizashi (+64 ATK) is made from 1 Leafy Branch (Fanged Vine normal) and 3 Violet Ores (Venom Ooze rare). Costs 2190 en.

Long Bow (+54 ATK) is made from 3 Leafy Branches (Fanged Vine normal). Costs 1840 en.

Flame Spear (+62 ATK, stab+fire normal attacks) is made from 1 Light Wood (2nd Stratum Chop 2) and 5 Fire Feathers (Firebird normal). Costs 2470 en.

Elowen gets an upgrade to her bow.

And Afon gets an upgrade to her spear.

She seems very fond of you. It was somewhat flattering to listen to her.

Here's where you can prove yourselves to the world, Tenebris. Best of luck to you.

There is something I must tell you now that you have reached that far. On the final floor of the 2nd Stratum, known as the Primitive Jungle, a terrible monster lies in wait. Radha has come to the decision to issue a mission to slay the monster. If you believe you are brave enough to overcome a challenge like none other, then accept this mission.

Yeah, yeah, just give us the details already.
You accept, then? Very good. The Chieftain will give you the details.

We are pleased to see you have undertaken the task of defeating Cernunnos. We have borrowed an ancient god's name for the monster ruling over the 10th floor... It's been many years since the first adventurers stepped into the Labyrinth's 10th floor. That is when the monster Cernunnos began to trouble our expeditions. Since then, only two explorers have succeeded in reaching the third Stratum. Our great hope is that you will defeat Cernunnos and reopen the path below. I wish you luck, adventurers...

I was grinding for scorpion drops, and Elowen and Afon got levels in the process.
This happens a lot in this game. I ended up overgrinding for this stratum because of drops on a later floor.

Close to Sagittarius Shot.
Oh... boy?

And close to Delayed Charge.

A solid few minutes later, and I finished.

Now I can start serving my customers with new utensils! I just need to go to the shop and ask the girl there to whip these into spoons and knives and such.
I'm sure they'll turn out great.
Hmhm, thank you. I'll make sure you're the first to use them.
We're tes-test subjects, huh?
I wouldn't put it like that! You know what, maybe you're not the right person to try them out.
Pretty sure she meant that as a joke.
I was joking, too. I know you wouldn't take that the wrong way. Haha, it's strange. Not so long ago, you were all rookies, and now you're handling all sorts of quests with ease. I'm still going to be counting on you. Keep it up, Tenebris! Now, here's your reward. Put it to good use.

A worthwhile reward.
These never really go down in value.

Whee.
Tiger Lance (+71 ATK, +1 TEC) is made from 1 Tiger Fang (Barbed Tiger rare). Costs 3290 en.

Chain Mail (+26 DEF) is made from 2 Violet Ores (Venom Ooze rare) and 3 Scarlet Ores (Sleeper Ooze rare). Costs 1100 en.

Spike Shield (+17 DEF, +1 STR) is made from 3 Sharp Stingers (Army Wasp normal) and 5 Leafy Branches (Fanged Vine normal). Costs 750 en.
You could do worse than tossing a Spike Shield on Landsknechts, or a Ronin that has a shield bonus via Grimoires.
Spike Shield is a really good pick for Landsknecht or Ronin for a good while. If you really want to stretch it the Spike Shield could easily last you until B21F. This seems absurd, but armor really just is that messed up in this game and Shield Mastery on a Grimoire is really good, better than most armor.

Hmaaaaaaugh...
Hm? Dame Sigrid, you're certainly tired this morning.
Huh? Oh, yeah, Momoe and I had things to discuss last night...
Were they...perhaps of a musical nature?
Wh...? Oh, no.
O-oh...
Why the disappointment?
...I wanted to form a band.

Power!
But it's made of wood...
Wood is, objectively, the most powerful material. ...Theatrically.

Down we go.

Let's start B9F for real.

♪ Who made these things~ ♪
♪ And whyyyyyyyyy~ ♪
...Oh, so that's what the band thing was about.
These things still irritate me. Just give me a Nectar instead, or something.

Looking into the brush, you find a baby monkey whose injured leg prevents it from moving. The tiny baby monkey, startled at your unfamiliar faces, hisses at you in an attempt to intimidate you. If you still feel that you cannot leave the baby monkey be, you are free to treat its wounded leg.
...C'mon, guys.
Though it is a wild animal, your conscience will not allow you to ignore its plight.

Allow me.
You know how to treat animals?
Basic care, yes. You'd be surprised how many people came to me asking for help with their pets.
...People have pet monkeys?
People have pet everythings.
Thierry carefully cradles the baby monkey so as to not frighten it and quickly begins treating its wound. Once the bandages are in place, the monkey's pain seems to subside. It moves its leg back and forth. As it dawns on the monkey that it can move again, it quickly jumps out of Thierry's arms. The monkey scampers up a tree, pausing to look back once and give a cheerful- sounding chirp before vanishing. You wave to the fleeing baby monkey before going on your way.
...Fare thee well, simian.
...Pfft. [You did not just say that.]
[You can lip-read whispering?!]

Wow! It's nothing!

Do-- Do elephants normally have tusks that big? A-and do they normally branch like that...?
I don't really know how to describe Tusked Ruins' movement pattern to this day. It's kind of like... They aggro on you when you're in their general area, and then they sometimes move to the spot where you were, regardless of where you move after? Also they don't step over damage tiles? I dunno.
If you're ever cardinally aligned with them, they will aggro you and begin to move in the direction you are instead. They don't actually pursue, to my knowledge. They also won't move across damage tiles.

That was...the most lackadaisical elephant I've ever seen.

Screw Towering Oozes. They take forever to kill (partly because of Drain), and they can do a bunch of nasty things to your party.
These things are absolutely terrible. If you don't have a source of ice damage they're a huge threat to your party. Paralysis is deadly even when a Towering Ooze is alone, and it's a critical threat when anything else is involved like those damned birds from earlier.

Case in point. This enemy type is awful. If a bird was here any one of our party would most likely be reduced to a smear either due to sleep bonus damage or being weakened by poison.

I should take note of a bug in EOU here: in EOU, if you use the Defend command, it halves poison damage. This is not supposed to happen.

Emmett, may I borrow a tuba?

And that's a random encounter enemy from here on out. Yay!

Some ways from the kindling is a stack of firewood that is still tall enough to build a decent fire. If you wish, you may use this campsite to take a rest yourselves.
Perhaps a quick rest would do you all some good after those nightmares...
Agreed.

...Emmett, taking a rest is a good idea, but don't start the fire again, please.
Starting a fire will just result in us losing TP. That's, uh, less than good.
Not one to overlook the serendipitous gift of a campsite, you sit and rest yourselves for a while. Fortunately for you, no enemies roam this place, and your repose passes in peace.

With your stamina replenished, you stand and move onward with lighter steps.

Convenient shortcut back to the start of B8F.
This staircase/shortcut combination is extremely useful. It allows for quick access to the fountain from any floor in the entire Labyrinth that we have Jump access on.

Cool dead end.

Elephants.

There's basically no point to the elephants when you can just walk over the damage tiles.

Up we go. Again.

Accursed scorpions.
This entire next segment is mostly about setting off spawns for the scorpion FOEs and baiting them in such a way that you can maneuver around the environment. It's not too rough, but it can get a little tedious.

B8F A7 Chop Point
Random Chop point. Sure.

This is where we start running into Petaloids in random encounters, by the way.

This whole bit is basically just running down corridors and turning back when you activate a scorpion.

There's a shortcut here, too.

It is exactly like the EO team to just put a scorpion right in front of the chest.

What kind of person would ever want a horn this useless? It doesn't even make a good sound...

Nah, where's this one lead?

Straight to some garbage. I don't even remember what this one has on it.

Alright, back to here.

Here's another elephant room that you can just...walk through damage tiles to get through.

Giving both of them the old loop-de-loop, as is common with "moves one tile a a time" FOEs, works just fine.

Finally, we're done with that nonsense.

Yep.
Apparently, there's a terrifying monster on B10F known as the King of the Jungle. The King of the Jungle... It sounds tough, but kind of arrogant, too. And the name was really hard to say. Cer, Cern... Cernmos?
Cernunnos.

One-armed drunkard:
...I've heard the rumors. You're marching along well, huh? Unlike a certain somebody. So, you gonna sit down, or what?
Enlighten me, sir.
...It's great to press on ahead. But sometimes, it's good to take a look behind you. You got any blank spaces on your map? You may not be able to reach them at the time you find them, but you might be able to now. For example, on the east side of B1F... Well, there might not be anything there. I just kinda remembered that from looking at my old stuff... See ya, Tenebris.
Scarred protector:
Hey, you've been doing well, I hear. Have you heard of the Healing Roller before? It's not that strong on its own, but it can heal other members of its party. You see... There was a sighting of them on B10F. If it teams up with other monsters, things get much worse. For example... What if it was with Cernunnos? ...I don't want to think about that! It might turn out to come true.
There're gonna be Healing Rollers along this Cernunnos prick, aren't there?
Yep.

Man of many piercings:
Hey, you! Yo! Have you heard?
No?
Wha?! You're behind the times, man! How can you not know about the Starseed?! All right, I'll tell you. I hear it's dropped by Cannon Palmss. But all the adventurers are like, "Whoa, man, the Coconut Strike is insaaane!" Getting smacked by a coconut does hurt. That palm tree sure knows his stuff.
Cannon Palms are very, very annoying, and we'll see why soon enough.

Shivering researcher:
*shudder* I'm scared... Cernunnos is scary... I've never seen it, but I'm scared... I'm sure it's huge and hairy and probably covered with nasty slime or something... ...Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, *gasp* just thinking about it scares me so much! But--but--but I want to go deeper into the forest! Oogh... My stomach hurts...
Gloomy hunter:
...Hm? Oh, you wanna talk with me? Huh? Oh, you don't know who I am? It's been a while since I was back in town. I've been chasing after something in particular. Thanks to that, I've been more or less living in the forest. If you're an adventurer, you should give it a try, too. I've been looking for a World Sprout. It's said to be part of the plant that builds the forest, but who knows if that's true or not. ...Well, give it a try if you feel like it.

I'm not going to sugarcoat it; it's gonna be a tough fight, Tenebris. You'd better be well-prepared. Something strange is happening in the Labyrinth... More and more dangerous monsters are appearing higher...

I suggest you ensure that you are prepared for anything. Who knows what could happen in there?

To close out the update: Quests!

Prayer to the stars:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would. A Starseed is a lover's charm said to make your wishes come true.
...You don't say?
The client would like you to bring her one of them. Starseeds are dropped by Cannon Palms on B10F. "Wish upon a star..." Huh. Isn't that cute?
The fossil charm:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would. Do you know of Lady Pompadaril? She's a strikingly beautiful woman in this city, and she's always wearing new accessories made of precious metals. She's grown tired of the accessories available in town, and wants one made from materials found in the Labyrinth. To that end, she's made a request for an Old Choker. You can get the fossils for it by mining down in the 2nd Stratum. Then you just need to sell those fossils at the store and the kid there can make you a necklace out of them. It may be tough, but good luck anyhow.
This is a bit of an odd request, in that we're supposed to give a bit of equipment to complete the quest, rather than just unlock it in the store.

You tired of unlocks yet?
Pearlescent Staff (+54 ATK, +30 TP, +2 TEC) is made from 1 Rainbow Gel (Towering Ooze normal) and 4 Light Woods (2nd Stratum Chop 2).

Plant Whip (+56 ATK) is made from 1 Flex Vine (Petaloid normal). Costs 2040 en.

Toxic Whip (+63 ATK, +1 TEC) is made from 3 Venom Barbs (Death Scorpion rare) and 5 Scrap Irons (2nd Stratum Mine 1). Costs 2720 en.
Pearlescent Staff is pretty good. It's pretty much the next step for anyone that uses TEC skills in your party.

Also I already had an Old Choker so

Good job, everyone. Hmm... So this is an Old Choker. It's a bit odd, but... I'm sure she'll look good with it. At any rate, keep up the good work.

Tusk Charms are made from the Tusked Ruin normal drop, and give +5 VIT, and +30% bash resistance. That's pretty decent defensive equipment, especially against bash damage (obviously).
They're super useful for things coming up real soon.

And that's it for now. Next time: B10F.
