Update 15: Welcome to the Abyssal Pain

WOOOOOOOOOOO--
NONONONONONONONONO!
--OOOOO-- [Oh, hello, Afon.]
...
[...Whyhaps are you cracking your knuckles? Are they perhaps tense from FEAR--] Eeeeeeeeagh!
LEAVE ELLY A-ALONE!
AAAAAAAAAAAAGH! FINALLY, I UNDERSTAND WHAT TRUE FEAR IS--
KNOCK IT OFF, YOU THREE. Quixote, take off that stupid sheet.
...Never a moment'a peace.
Today, we'll be exploring that weird blue forest.

The worry creasing his brow lifts when he sees you, and he smiles as he greets you.

Yes we are, is something wrong?
We've been looking forward to meeting the skilled warriors who felled the King of the Jungle. You've heard, then, that we were ordered to map the corridors of B11F and B12F. But with these dreadful beasts, and these twisted passages... We were at wit's end. I tell you, it's a sure relief to have help from the fine members of Tenebris! I'm sure you'll complete all the maps in no time.
The soldier walks briskly back home, as if his duty has been completed...
Man, are the soldiers here good for anything?
Stand aside, the Byeahs have gathering to do!
Uwagh! What the--

...Dear sweet gods.
Behold: The Byeah 2.0s!
Byeah.
...Well, those are some...impressive upgrades. I think.

This fucking amazing custom Byeah portrait is courtesy of Tyty.

money money money

Aw, what, we're not going into the nice, blue forest yet?
We have outstanding quests to take care of.
Blehhhhh.
Wait, I'm coming, don't forget me!
Oh, sorry, Sigrid.
Try t' be more punctual next time.
Ah, give her a-- Oh my...
Sorry, sorry, I'm here, just...had to grab a new sword... Um, Momoe, is something...wrong?
Oh, uh, no, nothing's wrong, I just...didn't know you were changing up your outfit and...hair. It looks nice!
O-oh, thank you!
If you two're done flirtin'--
L-Ladette!
I mean, she's not wrong... I feel very out of place right now...
Can we get going already?

I changed up Sigrid's colors and altered her clothes slightly.

Specifically, we have to take care of Pest control.
You suddenly remember the quest you accepted at the pub... The quest was about exterminating a number of parasites on B10F. Perhaps those parasites are beyond this very door... If you have enough energy and gumption to eliminate these parasites, you should open the door and go inside...
We've got energy and gumption aplenty. Let's go.

The insects may be near...

Brace y'selves, ladies. ...And Emmett.
You sprinkle Sugar Water around the surrounding trees. Lured by the sweet scent, a cloud of butterflies emerges and draws near... The swarm of poisonous butterflies hesitates, then attacks you!

Toxinflies are dangerous. That poison is very capable of knocking out most of a party member's HP--and bear in mind that I have the max HP-boosting cordial in effect here. If I didn't, Emmett and Ladette would be in danger of being one-shot by one tick of the poison.
These things are pretty soft, but if you aren't lucky you could very well end up eating a one-two of an Attack and their very strong poison. Singular elimination is probably a better idea than area of effect if your potency isn't very high so you can avoid getting overwhelmed.

Also, they just hurt in general.

They can't take much of a beating, though. Bear in mind both Volt Rounds is level 5, and and Raging Edge isn't even that.

Prior grinding for motherfucking Tiger Fangs resulted in EXP bars being desynced early in the update. Ugh. At least I can fix it once I edit the save...
Tiger Fangs are a cursed item. I was at Lv28 by the time I finished S2 because of those damn things...

Mrgh...

Remember the bee encounter? It's baaaaaaaack!

Aaaaaaaaaagh... My...stomach...

Is spinning around everywhere really the best way of hitting multiple enemies?
If you've--urp--got any better ideas, I'm--oogh--open to hearing them...

Oh man, Judith and Sigrid are not ending this battle in good condition.

...Uuuugh...
Please let these...be the last ones...
Get behind me, ladies...

Two of the Toxinflies being put in the back row is severely annoying. Makes them harder to kill.

...RrrraaaaaaAAAAAAGHHHHHH!
I suppose that's the adrenaline kicking in.
Falcon Slash is good. It'll get even better later on.

Not good. Very, very not good.

Better than...death by poison...

Hmph.

aaaaaagh not just my EXP bars but my levels are desynced now too

And here I thought butterflies were one'a the last nice things left in th' world.

Emmett, what are you doing, that's valuable medi--
If we don't use what we have right now, we're going to be dead, Judith!
Yes, yes, I know, it hurts to use a high-level consumable here, but if you're not going to use them, then what's the point of having them in the pack at all?

Oh, come on...
These things don't like you much, huh?

Death t' purple butterflies.

I'm already poisoned, leave me alone...

Please, stop...
i know current HP has a big effect on determining enemy aggro but still, what the fuck

Die...already...

Oh, I didn't mean to hurt you. Much.

Oh for-- Stop picking on her!
Why are we talking to the butterflies, again?

Finally.

What a mess.

Although the ground is strewn with the corpses of poisonous butterflies, there are none left alive. You have completed the quest! Now all you have to do is return to the pub and report your activities.

I hate insects... Hearing that you've wiped out a whole species of them makes me really happy.
...Okay then!
I'd expect nothing less of seasoned adventurers. Killing bugs is a piece of cake, right? Tell you what, though, if one ever shows up in my house, I'm asking you to get rid of it for me.

Medica IIIs restore 200 HP, if I haven't covered them already.

I should probably put Raging Edge up to level 5 soon.
It'll start falling behind pretty badly if the breakpoint isn't met. I won't really hide from the fact that Landsknecht really needs any edge they can get for personal damage.

I'm just working towards Boost Up on Sigrid.

Momoe gets slightly more damage on Flame Grater.

I want Taboo Rondo on Emmett, which is...going to take a while.

Meh.

Viking (+65 ATK, +1 VIT) is made from 1 Laterite (2nd Stratum Mine 2) and 3 Tiger Fangs (Barbed Tiger rare). Costs 3000 en.

Battle Axe (+70 ATK) is made from 3 Bent Claws (Giant Sloth normal) and 4 Iron Shells (Death Scorpion normal). Costs 2930 en.

Jelly Shield (+20 DEF, +10% fire resistance) is made from 3 Rainbow Gels (Towering Ooze normal) and 3 Tiger Furs (Barbed Tiger normal). Costs 1040 en.

I buy Vikings for both Judith and Sigrid, since it's a pretty big upgrade for both.

Alright, let's finally get on with the new stratum.
IT BEGINS

...Huh.
Might I suggest we check the rest of the floor first?
There's no way these stairs're legit. Let's do that.

It's alright though, I've got excellent defensive support here, such as

Arm binds leave basically all physical damage dealers helpless, and leg binds let enemies move before us. Both are extremely bad things!
These things are absolute bastards. If you run a lot of physical like I tend to do, they'll massively disrupt any strategy that you might have.

Finally, I got it to stop...undulating.

Iced.

And severed.
...We're all feeling humorless today, I see.
Or we could just be annoyed by that butterfly gauntlet.
It's somewhat hard to stay happy when you've just died several times, even for me...

On closer inspection, you discover a broken wand.

A solemn reminder of those that have fallen.
...Jeez, we really are kinda dark today.

Okay, I'm gonna cheer everyone up...by jumping across this hole to get that chest!
Don't.
If you wanna give yourself a concussion, be my guest.

Forest Bats are fast and can easily inflict panic. What's not to like about them?
Forest Bats are very deceptive. They seem like a minor threat, but we might see what that Panic is capable of doing to a group later.

Frogs hit really hard and can prolong battles if you're not careful about not leaving them for last.

Are you noticing a pattern with S3 enemies yet? Here's a hint: they're all EXTREME PAIN.
These things aren't a huge issue if you have physical mitigation. If you don't... well...

Of course. What else should I have expected...
GREAT FUCKING START
...Yeah...

Okay, I have no interest in hating frogs, let's run!
...Ugh, fine.
I do not have the resources to get out of this unscathed, so I just decide to run away.

By the way, please consider that I haven't even gotten to the main part of the floor yet.

You push the plants out of the way and dig a bit, uncovering a chipped axe.

No wonder these guys died down here.

It's a bit hard to see here due to the fog, but in the distance is a Blood Ant--essentially an FOE version of a Killer Ant, with higher (but not by much) HP. They have a simple movement pattern: they patrol a linear path, and if they spot you, all FOEs in the room will aggro on you, and then chase you.

ENOUGH WITH THE ANTS!
...Oh.
...That's the first time I've heard her shout...

Thought Guardian Ants were plenty capable of prolonging battles? Say hello to Honey Ants, which make that even worse.

Also, you need to farm 8 of a 20% drop to make Medica IIIs. Have fun!!
These ones have a real annoying tendency to be in the back row. Hope you have ranged attackers!

No.

Go to sleep.

Night-night, Froggy.

...Phew.
That went pleasantly well, for a change.
I've not felt this relieved since... Well, since that camping trial ended.

I am about to SCREAM.
A-as much as I want to, too, maybe we should wait until we're back in town...
Not often you see Flirtia there being the reasonable one.
Servitor Ants are FOE versions of Guardian Ants, and patrol an area by taking two steps at a time. Same aggro rules as Blood Ants.

Woo. A door that won't be relevant for a while.

...
ants

give me a break.

god this encounter is mean.
There are no brakes. Sorry.

...She says, as she gets out of it unscathed.

I need good encounter-clearing skills now more than ever.

WHY ARE ALL THESE MEAN ENCOUNTERS ON THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE STRATUM

Fuck's sake.

I said I'd do it, and I did it.

Still working towards Taboo Rondo.

Ladette's still rounding out her attack skills.

That was so not worth the time it took to get here.

Shred Whip (+78 ATK) is made from 1 Bloodbear Claw (Redclaw normal) and 3 Gum Throats (Treefrog normal). Costs 5210 en.

Gum Glove (+15 DEF) is made from 1 Honey Crystal (Honey Ant rare) and 2 Elastic Skins (Madworm normal). Costs 1280 en.

Real strong wizard shoes there.

Secret passage here.

Eh.

Nope. This hole doesn't even go anywhere useful.

B11F A6 Mine Point

I dunno if you can tell but I'm fucking sick of ants

Again, really not worth the trip. I don't even remember what this thing has in it, but it's a Silver Grimoire, so it at least has a few slots on it.
Silvers are some of the better foundations you can use to create worthwhile Grimoire Stones. All of these are handy, regardless of the skills they have solely because of the slot counts.

Gem Staff (+59 ATK, +20 TP, +3 TEC) is made from 1 Sea Pyroxene (3rd Stratum Mine 1). Costs 2900 en.

Godhunter (+79 ATK) is made from 1 Steel Chitin (Killer Ant normal). Costs 5360 en.

Fancy Coat (+26 DEF, +10 HP) is made from 1 Iron Exoskeleton (Honey Ant normal). Costs 1790 en.
I ended up using Gem Staff for a really long time. It's a pretty good staff.

Wow! It's nothing!

If you are done mapping the other floor as well, then return to the Radha and show them the results. If not, then move along to the next floor, and complete the second half of your task.
...I'm not done with this floor yet, though.

Oh thank god a useful shortcut.

Why no, I have not had to constantly go back to town because party members keep getting killed by encounters, why do you ask?
Shamshir (+71 ATK) is made from 3 Honey Crystals (Honey Ant rare) and 3 Steel Chitin (Killer Ant normal). Costs 4500 en.

Not going down that.

B11F D4 Mine Point

Every door here leads to a pit, by the way.

The ants are so preoccupied with their work that they have not yet noticed your party. If you wish, you can attack the ants and plunder their harvest.
Kill the ants.
...I'm glad we're on the same page.
I don't think the rest of us are gonna argue!
Um--

...Mm.

Well, I worked off a lot of stress.
Same.
Finally, some luck.

After eliminating the ants, you have a look at the harvest they were carrying. It seems to be building materials for their nest, as well as some food. You stow them in your packs before resuming your investigation of the forest Labyrinth.

Okay.

You take a moment to dig the sword out of the dirt.

You believe you have found the lost belongings of the three fallen adventurers.
I can't wait to be rid of these things.
Why?
Just having them in our pack feels...depressing.

It seems your guild's become quite the celebrities here.
We're...technically done with the floor now, so the town NPCs have new dialogue.

T'forest's just full o'mysteries... Why y't'ink you can find different t'ings and monsters, all in one place?
Beats me! I'm just here for the fun of cutting monsters.

If you have some time, I know they'd be grateful if you could take care of some of them.
Good thing we already do that.

Leggy dark hunter:
Hi! Are you doing your best to fight monsters? Having a new Stratum to explore is so exciting!
That's...one way to put it.
Are you finding new things? I know I am... Hm hm hm. Now, you know our little arrangement, right? I'm pretty hungry!

...Some pasta does sound nice right about now.
'Ey, Valerie, six orders'a pasta here.
But pasta isn't my-- Ohhh..
Mmmmm, these thick noodles go so well with this sauce... Hm hm hm. As thanks for the pasta... Information on Sleepy Eyeball! Ta-dah! You can get that item when you put a Madworm to sleep. I let my alchemist have it. After all... You know what I'm getting at, don't you? Hm hm hm... Now, then. Maybe I'll have another plate. Though I've got to watch my figure...
Whee, I already got that.
Some Honey Ant Sherbet for dessert--
None for me.
...You should really talk to Thierry about this ant thing...
Ugh, that name. It's like it's got ants inside or something.
Oh, thank the gods, someone gets it.
This is just the honey, right? There aren't any ants in this? Well, it tastes good, anyway. Mmmm... That was nice. In return, I'll tell you something special. Ta-dah! Iced Sweat! You can get it if you defeat a Treefrog by freezing it. Isn't that amazing?
...Uhhhh...
...Oh, what's with that face? This is useful information!
Boy taking notes:
If it isn't Tenebris. Do you have business with me? You do, don't you?
Supposin' we do, what've you got t' share?
New monsters have been discovered on the 3rd Stratum... I can't help but be excited by this. I haven't felt this excited since I was a child... What? In any case, the new swarms of ants have distinct roles within their colony. The Killer Ant attacks intruders with its sharp jaws. Plus, it's been confirmed that they take formations that increase their attack power. The Honey Ant, on the other hand, will use their Nectar Salve to heal its partners in battle. They are not much alone, but in groups, you will have to prepare for a lengthy fight... In a sense, the ants form guilds to cover their strengths and weaknesses, just as you adventurers do. And so ends my lecture.
Woulda been real useful before we went explorin'.
Friendly landsknecht:
Hey, Tenebris. You know the mixer who drinks here?
We've talked to him a few times. Does that count as "knowing" him?
He really knows a lot! You can learn a lot just listening to him. For example, you need Honey Crystal to make a powerful Medica, and you need Lapis Strawberry for a TP potion. We definitely need to collect more Lapis Strawberry. I hear the shop is constantly running out of that potion.
I can guarantee you that we'll be buying out the entire stock once we find where to get those strawberries.
Oh, yeah. And Fossil Nest can be turned into something really good, it seems. He didn't tell me what, though. He said it'd be better if I found out for myself. Heheh! He sure knows how to get an adventurer pumped up for adventuring! Still, I wonder what it makes? What the heck do you do with a fossilized bug nest...?
Angry-looking alchemist:
Fighting today, fighting tomorrow, fighting just for the sake of fighting...
Yep, that's a pretty decent summation of what I do. What's that got to do with anything?
Our leader's into Treefrogs right now... We walk around and around the forest until we run into them. I can't tell you how many times our front line's fallen to those Redclaws' Charge and Bloody Claws... Oh, it was hell when our entire front line had their arms and legs bound by the Madworm's Cling... And yet, I'm sure our leader's going to make us go look for Treefrogs again today, too...
Our deepest sympathies...
Man eating with gusto:
Phew... This is horrible! I heard there was a lumberjack's wonderland of top-quality lumber trees on the 3rd Stratum. And now that Cernunnos is gone, it's the perfect time to make some money! Or so I thought... Then came the ants. They go around gnawing on all the trees with their powerful jaws, ruining any that they don't take for themselves. They're probably making a nest somewhere nearby. I wonder if there's a way to thin their numbers. If their population keeps growing, that timber's in danger. And so is my wallet!
Please, gods, don't let that be true...
It's true. It has to be true. That'd be precisely our luck, wouldn't it?
...It's true, but you shouldn't say it...

You fuckin' bet we're having problems.
But, things have changed a lot since I was out on the front lines. You kids have to lead the way now. Good luck.

Sure. Fat lot of good that'll do us, though.

Quest tiiiiiiiiime~

Yes, I know this update's getting long.

Love, cast in silver:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would. The client wants to make a ring using Corundum. A marriage proposal with a hand-made ring... That's so romantic.
...That's a good idea, yeah. Hey, Siggy, do you have a notepad? I gotta make a note to myself.
Um, uh, um... S-sorry, no.
Aw.
But before he can do that, he needs your help. I heard you can mine it at the 3rd Stratum. Good luck.
That's an excellent job for the Byeahs.

Official business I:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would. It must be a real emergency if the Hall is sending out alerts for all adventurers. You'll need to get the details from the Hall's soldier on B10F. I've heard there's a man-eating monster that's attacking and eating anything it sees... Be careful, everyone.
Anything has to be better than the ants.
Lost item:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would. Somebody found a boot and brought it here, thinking it was an adventurer's. Nobody's claimed it so far, though. I posted a few fliers, but no one has come forward. I want you to ask around. Here it is. How does somebody lose a boot? Maybe it belongs to a rookie adventurer... One who can't tie his laces properly?

Hi, hello, who--
Oh, who are you...?
Yeah, that.
This boot likely belongs to a high-level survivalist who has made it to the 3rd Stratum. A small man...chestnut brown hair... In a party made up of mainly other survivalists specializing in gathering. He is in no hurry to find this boot, but it's not something he can afford to lose forever, either. Let's see... If you were going to look for him, I would recommend B11F, in the northeast mining spot.

That was strange. Does he know the owner of this boot? Well, we don't have any other clues to go on, so why don't you take a look at the northeast mining spot on B11F? Good luck.

To close out the update, here are some items.
Tabar (+84 ATK) is made from 5 Steel Chitins (Killer Ant normal). Costs 5870 en.

Flute (+60 TP; Troubadour only) is made from 1 Sea Branch (3rd Stratum Chop 2). Costs 1500 en.

Stonard (Increases one party member's defense by 30% for 6 turns) is made from 1 Crinoid Leaf (3rd Stratum Take 1). Costs 400 en.
Yup.

Next time: we bring a boot back to some idiots. Then we go through B12F.
