Update 31: Not Pictured: 25 Minutes of Trying To Kill a Bone Lizard

...
Hah! Hyah! Hoooah!
BOOM!
Eek!
Ow, ow, splinters, ow!
An' you called me weird for hiding behind my shield.
Well, you didn't slice and dice it like you said you were going to, but--
But you made a training dummy flat-out explode! I feel like that might be even more impressive.
That, yeah. Certainly never seen anyone do that with a blade.
...Hmm. Maybe I have gotten good.
Name it.
Eh?
Y' just made your signature move, right? Y' need to give it a name.
I agree with Vince. Name it.
...Okay then. This'll be-- This-- This'll be, um... Okay, I'll need to get back to you on that.

Now that Ren and Tlachtga are taken care of, let's explore the rest of B21F.
Also, I'm here now.

Fascinating. These crabs appear to have taken up refuge in common garbage...

Pylon Crabs are trash mobs except for the part where they hurt like hell. Take a look at that STR stat, and the disparity from the rest of its stats. This is a pattern that we'll see basically throughout the rest of the game: obscenely high STR stats that result in damn near every enemy hitting hard.
These things are just sorta there for this point in the game. They hit a bit hard, but they're still nowhere near the realms of stuff we'll see later.
Ah, cut resistance. These things, amongst others, made me really happy I use axe Landsknecht.

Well, that's sharper than I was expecting...
Ow.

Judith has pretty heavy physical resistance in play, and even she takes a stone's throw from half of her HP as damage from Roll.

This is impractical and ineffective.

This ain't.
What I'd give to have taken Katya in Judith's place.
Bizarrely enough, I didn't have much of a hard time with a physical purist party with these. Maybe I was overleveled or just stubborn.

You'd think me throwing an axe with all of my strength would result in more than a dent.
Maybe we could make armor from that!

...On second thought, nah.
I mean, if you're willing to sacrifice all mobility, I'm sure Shilleka's willing to oblige...

...'Kay then.

Great. Good hallway.
These walls...were here before the crystallization set in. Why would anyone have constructed this hallway?

Okay, I gotta ask. How the hell is all'a this buried below the tree? How fuckin' far does all'a this go?
...Really far?
...
...
...I can't even refute that.

As you step off the last stair, a wall directly in front of you obstructs your path. Before you turn to head back, you notice a paper, yellowed with age, lying on the floor.
Gods, how old is this place...?
You can vaguely make out words on the paper, which seems on the verge of disintegrating.
Allow me!
You-- You know the language on this thing?
I've studied it before, actually! You'd be surprised how frequent it comes up in my trade!
That just raises further questions!

must... nue... research... Japan... Wife is waiting... mankind... at stake...

It must have been an extremely old letter. As nothing else here catches your eye, you decide to leave this place.
...Mankind at stake?!
I mean, we're here now, so I...guess whatever research was going on paid off.

B21F D1 Mine Point

Anyone wanna hedge bets on whatever's down here being completely useless?
Is there any value in betting on a foregone conclusion?
Nope, 'cept for the fun of it. I was kinda hopin' bard boy would put some ental on it, too.
Hey!

Shortcuts in Lost Shinjuku are very hard to miss.

I wanna find whoever built this place, a long time ago, and smack them.
Wholly agreed.
Mhm.
Same.
Would screaming extremely shrilly in their ear be a sufficient alternative?
...Y'know, bard boy, sometimes you've got good ideas.

    • Nightcap (+37 DEF, +10 TP, +2 TEC): Made from 1 Slumber Web. Costs 10500 en.
Silkbinders are the worst. Attempting to bind every body part on every party member is bad enough, and then the evasion debuff makes it incredibly easy to by hit by inaccurate attacks even if a party member didn't have their legs bound.

Oh, and they're fast, too. I'd honestly recommend a Survivalist plus Hexer to just disable Silkbinders before they can do anything, by means of Quick Step. Hell, even a Gunner would suffice in place of the Hexer.
These things are absolute bastards. Combined with some of the stuff we'll see later, they're a strong candidate for one of the most dangerous enemies in the entire game bar S6.
Binding String on a Grimoire isn't much good as a binding skill, but the evasion debuff is alright. Sort of expensive, though.

Oh, for the gods' sakes, it's going to take me forever to get all these strings off my coat.
You're not worried about the crabs beating you up?
I trust the rest of you.

Please, stop, I...don't need to be rolled, I'm not bread...

sigh

You went out of your way to do that!

Don't worry, I've got this!

Oh, yeah. I don't know why, but sometimes Ladette just...regains the TP for whatever skill she used last when Defending. I mean, I'm not complaining, but it's a bit strange.

Evidently, you don't got it.
Mrgrgr!
...Your kicks don't hurt as much as you think.
Hrmph...
thank goodness sigrid wasn't here

PAH--! Gods, if I never get spider silk over my mouth again, it'll be too soon.

If you could succeed in breaking the wall down, it may create a new path.
Absolutely not.
Yeah how about no.
If anyone here wants t' get ambushed by monsters, be my damn guest.
I could sing over the sound...?
Don't.
Thinking it meaningless to continue, you put away your weapons and return to the investigation.
Proceeding with this event results in getting a Crystal Wall...at the cost of being ambushed by a group of monsters.

Goody. Severe damage and curse. My two favorite things.
"Thank god I had an axe Landsknecht", part the second. Bring ice, by the way, especially if you don't have a Hexer or whip DH. Those tanglers are useful later. Or now, should you be so inclined.
To be honest, I could do worse than carrying around a few Tanglers. Shilleka has a few of them in stock already because all of the frog enemies in EOU have Ice Sweat for their conditionals.
Honestly, these things were just kind of there for me. Heavy brute force works out well in a lot of situations.

Try harder.
Or that could happen. I'm fine with that.
Case in point.

OW!

Why do frogs have to spill so much blood when they're bashed to death?
That is #1 on the list of things I never thought I would hear today. Or ever.

Holy shit.
It just...goes on. As far as the eye can see.
I want-- No, I must learn all that I can of the old world, and the civilizations that inhabited it...

So that's what all that clackin' was comin' from.
Bone Lizards patrol a set path. That's it. They don't do anything else.

...Huh.
I would...assume it can be opened...
Hey, worth a shot. Mind giving me a hand, Judith?
Sure.
GrrrrrrRRRRRRRRGH...!
...Nope. No luck.
It won't even budge.
Small detail: you can see the International Symbol of Access on that panel there.

They make the least impressin' impact sound I've ever heard, too.

It looks from your perspective like an Ariadne Thread, an essential tool for explorers like yourselves! It seems the Ariadne Thread could be claimed simply by reaching up for it...
We have absolutely no need for that.
Hell, I even brought my own backup Thread.
Having no shortage of Ariadne Threads at the moment, you decide to leave.
Reaching toward the "Thread" results in a battle.
I seem to recall there being a reward in it too, but maybe what I remember is lusting for monster death

Already going hard on me, huh, game?

If these stairs're pointless again, I'm gonna be mad.

Okay, this weird abundance of stairs is kinda...disorienting? I think that's the right word.

...
All in favor of retreating, say "aye."
Aye.
Aye

We might as well.

Before you turn to head back, you notice a paper, yellowed with age, lying on the floor. You can vaguely make out words on the paper, which seems on the verge of disintegrating.
This again, hm?

Only worry... Visil... husband... alone... unimagin... liness... the death... what saddens me...

...That message unnerves me in a way I can't really fully describe.
Same.
I'm not a big fan of that "become food" part...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm reasonably certain the message implies that Yggdrasil basically absorbs anyone who dies within the Labyrinth. You might be inclined to think this has more to do with Story than Classic, but I'm pretty sure this note was exactly the same in EO1.

It was hilariously broken! I miss it.

Ah. Innuendo.

...Wait, that's it?
I'm quite sure I've mapped everything correctly...
I guess those last stairs we found were the right way forward.
...So, who's for going back to rest for the night?
Me.

I probably shouldn't be happy about the situation with the Chieftain, but it was nice to see some old faces.

What's wrong, Shilleka?
Oh, sorry about t'at. I shouldn't be actin' t'is way in front of t'customers. Gotta stay professional.

I will never understand the minds of those who slander. I even politely declare their offers by writing to say, "I have no interest in your trifling affair..."
...

Eh.
Everyone's following your lead and heading to the 5th Stratum as well. I hope somebody finds the Chieftain soon...

No new patrons.

Whole buncha quests, though.

The gold enthusiast II:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would.
What does this jerk want now?
The Gold Fur can be found dropped by a giant beast that lives in the Labyrinth. The client wants ten of them so he can wear gold all over his body... What fashion sense, huh?
Ah, great, exactly as fuckin' stupid as last time.
Ten of those would probably look even worse than the last thing...
I've seen the Golden Baron a couple of times before, and... Well, it's not nice to talk about others' fashion sense, is it? At any rate, he's paying good money for this, so good luck.
Ivory Princess' dream II:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would. Do you remember the Ivory Princess? Thanks to your help, she can now sleep, but her nightmares haven't stopped.
You thought they'd stop after Quixote "sung" to her?!
Her nightmares have started becoming more and more realistic: of monsters coming from the forest and attacking. You might think it's just a dream, right? But apparently her dreams have always had prophetic properties. Her father got worried and has decided to make this posting to investigate the Labyrinth. If there aren't any monsters, great, but if there are, he wants you to eliminate them. Either way, it will put his daughter at ease. So, would you go patrol the first floor of the Labyrinth?
Long as we get paid, I guess.
It's hard to believe someone's dreams could tell the future... But be careful anyway.
The Crystal Maiden:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would. The client has always worn her family's distinctive blue crystal. And, to be honest, it looks good on her. But she says she's no longer satisfied with just that. She wants to try wearing crystals of other colors. For now, she wants you to obtain three Shiny Vines. They're vines made of beautiful crystals. I'd like to see one, myself. Good luck!
Byeah fodder.

Reversal of the poles:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would. This job is...strange. When you're on B18F, you somehow end up back at the entrance before you realize it.
Excuse me?
...Am I havin' a stroke? Did I hear that right?
I don't get it. I didn't get it explaining it to you. But the people at the Hall are all confused about it as well. They want someone to investigate it. Good luck.

Why do you have this limit again, Valerie? I still don't get it.

Whatever the reason, it's not a bad thing that everyone's so lively about exploring the Labyrinth.

...Which is completely understandable. None of us is really as reliable as the Chieftain was...

Let's go take care of Ivory Princess' dream II.
What a waste of my time.
As you are about to leave, a soldier stops and questions you.

You explain the quest you undertook regarding the Ivory Princess' dreams.
Some stupid crap about some girl dreamin' this place'd be swarmed by monsters.
She said that...? Well, as you can see, the forest is as quiet as ever... Isn't it? Come to think of it... It could be a little too quiet. I can't even hear birds chirping...
You and the soldier strain to listen to anything strange, when suddenly the roars of monsters ring out!

...No fuckin' way.
I'm...baffled. How did the dream-- Oh, never mind.

How-- What?!
Where'd these things come from?!
I'm certain I saw one fall out of a tree...
You must not let a single monster into town!

Every bear except the one that's red on the bottom screen is a Cutter. These things are utterly irrelevant by this point in the game, so... I'm just gonna cut to the next interesting thing.
cut the cutters so you can cut to the next scene

...Uh.
What's up?
How are we...going to catch those bears just behind us?
...

Nononononono!

You hear a soldier's scream. You have failed to stop the monsters...

Please let the town be okay please let the town be okay please let the town be--

...Okay?
Wait, but-- We thought you...were mauled by...bears...? I'm really confused...
Huh? You thought I was dead? Nope, I'm alive and well. See? Though, it was a near thing. Luckily I had called for backup earlier. We were able to push the monsters back. But, of course, we couldn't actually defeat them. They're still on B1F. Please, defeat those monsters for us!
Oh, thank the gods.
Back to it, then.

Eat it, bear.

Anyway, the red bear...just sort of...does what it wants. I'm not sure what its movement pattern was, if it has one.

Eventually I just...sort of happen to run into it.

You have fought off all the monsters that had been preparing to attack the town!

But you defeated the monsters. Now she can finally rest easy. Maybe now she won't be troubled by such nightmares any longer. Everyone's calling you the heroes of the town now, you know. I was given a little something from the Hall as a reward for protecting the town, so you get a bonus. Thank you, everyone.

Man, what is this thing? Why's the blade completely round-- OW!
Did-- Did you mean to move that fast...? Were you practicing that?
NO.
The Sonic Dagger has all of 1 ATK. On the other hand, it also had a whopping +30 speed modifier. Put this on a support that needs speed and can equip swords, or, hell, give a support that needs speed a Grimoire with a sword bonus so they can equip this.

The only downside is that you only get one of these.

With one slot in our log cleared out, let's take this thing.

A sister's parting gift:
Decided to take the request, have you? Good, I've been hoping someone would. This request is to bring five wings that bring good luck. The client's brother is going on a journey to somewhere far away, and she wants to make a charm for him. Unfortunately, she doesn't know the name of the feather she wants you to get for her. Her description is: "They're bee wings that are pretty like angels," and she saw them in the compendium. Maybe you'll find what she's looking for in your compendium as well.
...Nope. No it isn't.
Guess we'll just keep our eyes out, then...

A soldier for the Hall notices you and approaches.
Let's take care of this one too.

As it stands now, when you're walking about on this floor you'll suddenly be returned to the entrance. Through our investigations, we've determined that the cause of this phenomenon is the Geomagnetic Field. If you can reach a certain point on this floor, the field should realign and this situation will be resolved.
...What, no clues besides that?
But, I'm ashamed to say that we've never been able to reach that spot. We get sent back here every time. We've figured out that from here, you can go straight to the wall... That's it. I hate to ask this, but can you get to this specific location for us?

I'm sure experienced adventurers like you will be able to find a way through. Good luck, then.
...Follow me, everyone!
E-Emmett, where are you--

Oh my gods this is SO TEDIOUS.
Gonna agree with you on that one. The hell're you doing, bard boy?
Following a path based on the vibration of my lute strings!
...
I'd normally ask "why," but... Well, we haven't gotten warped back, yet...
Just keep walking in straight lines.

Oh, thank the gods, there's still forest folk around...

Wait wh--

Oh, come on.

Non-leth--
We know.
...Thank you.

Knew startin' to carry rubber bullets everywhere would be a good idea.

Have a nice rest.
But, she dies falls unconscious with a smile on her face. The strangeness of this fills you with foreboding... When she finally perishes passes out, a small stone rolls from her hand and stops at your feet.
Pay no attention to the woman behind the curtain.
Eh?
You pick up the stone and examine it, noticing a strange painting of a beast. Perhaps this stone has something to do with the Geomagnetic Field. You decide to take it with you.

There is a stone monument here. You can see a small hole in the monument, in which something might fit. You can try to insert the painted stone you found if you want to.
Okay, put it in just so...
When you place the stone in the hole, a bright light suddenly pierces through every wall, blinding you.

Gah!

It would appear that the problem with the Geomagnetic Field has been resolved. You don't understand the logic, but it would seem that removing this stone is what caused the phenomenon. As you stop and consider this, the soldier you spoke to previously comes running up to you.

If you...say so.
You explain what you have found, and the soldier nods with a serious expression on his face.
A strange monument, and the stone was removed... All right, I'll report to Radha Hall and have them look into it.
I'm confused how that was causing the problem...

You have completed this quest. You should return to the pub and report your progress.
I'm left with more questions than... Actually, we didn't really get any answers besides "where was all of this weird stuff happening from."

But still... What was going on there? A stone monument and a stone with a beast painted on it... I think the Hall will do its own thorough investigation later, so let's wait to see what they have to say. Here you go, your reward.

The game's not exactly subtle about its foreshadowing in this quest, huh.
They're never exactly subtle about anything.
