Update 33: Guild Tenebris vs. A Baneblade (Gimle)

How in the hell can that innkeeper be so creepy and off-puttin', but also be a really godsdamned good cook?
...Um, what's the correlation between creepiness and ability to make good food?
Met a lotta creeps in my time. Enough for a pretty satisfactory sample size. An' trust me, none of them were good cooks. Tasted like utter ass, each and every thing they made.
The innkeeper is pretty creepy, I suppose...
Oh, come on, that's just a--
Hey, uh, guys?
Oh boy, here comes Vicious Vinny. What's wrong now?
There's, uh. There's a giant red metal. Thing. That's making a mess of the first floor.
...You're going to have to be more descriptive than that, Vince.
I would if I could! I think I saw it in one of Quixote's weird JRMA catalogues?
...Tell me it's not one of those Tank things.

It's one of those Tank things.
What the fuck is this thing even built for?
Quixote said he had nothing to do with this, by the way.
For once, I'm inclined to believe him.
How come?
We'd have already known if Fear-obsessed Quixote had one.
...Good point.
Ow, ow, ow, my feet already hurt just looking at it...

Between its extremely high damage and incredibly dangerous disabling skill (Mustard Gas), Gimle is a fairly standard boss, all things considered.

Except for Bank Shot. Bank Shot is capable of ruining runs, because it effectively means that Gimle will deal double damage on the next turn. When a boss is already dishing out very high damage, that's not exactly fun to deal with, especially if it throws out Flamethrower, because then, in all likelihood, you're going to end up not mitigating at least one of the attacks, which will probably get two people killed. If you're lucky. If you're not lucky, then probably more.
Uh, wow, this thing doesn't look fun to fight at all. It resists all the physical elements?! And those status resistances are aggravating, too. Sleep seems like a good way to deal with Bank Shot but no, you're not allowed! Oh, and check out Return of Duster there. Smoke Bomb my ass.

wait you can poison this thing? Are we dealing with biotech here?
I... Genuinely am not familiar with this boss in the slightest! I never got that far in Story. I don't really have much to say about this.

This wasn't a great idea, mostly because I didn't put Judith in the back row. War Cry would be far better used on Katya and Ladette than Vince (who won't be attacking and therefore basically just gets a defense debuff) and Sigrid (who doesn't deal consistent damage).

Flamethrower is better to have mitigation against than a normal Attack.

I'm not putting much stock in Sigrid's disable chances here, but she might as well try.

Same old setup for both Katya and Ladette.

It's red, therefore, it's gonna use fire!

Aw, man, is there anywhere on this thing that won't hurt to kick?

Maybe the weird protrusion in the back? I'm guessing it's a brain-like thing.
It has a what?

Got some freshly-polished bullets for ya.
You polish your bullets?
Not regularly. I keep a few around just in case something's really worth shootin'.
there's nothing like the feeling of slamming a freshly-polished bullet into a well-greased chamber

...Not the most effective smoke bomb I've ever seen.
Could've been a lot worse.

Judith doesn't have much else to do.

And now it's time for these two to attack.

YEP, OW, THAT REALLY HURT.
Make sure to go to Thierry after we're done.

...So how did your shield just...eat all that fire?
Trade secret.
...
...I don't know. And I kinda don't want to.
Entirely fair.

Damage!

I should really switch over to the Charged shots soon.

You know, the hardest part of hitting something isn't actually hitting it.
Hm?
It's the reverberations from your own hit.
Boy, is that relatable.
...Given that Judith is hitting a 75% vulnerability there, I'm going to opt to be impressed by that.

...Did that thing just do the same "firing way into the sky" thing Elowen does?
Looks like it.
Are we in for a lot of pain in a bit?
Looks like it.

I think I just broke it, sort of.
Oh yay.

...Not enough, I guess.
Oh no.

Burnout...

Can confirm, Katya... That hurt a lot...
Fffffffffuck.
Fun!

You stay right there, we got first aid to do.

Good job on paralyzin' that thing.
Oh, uh, thanks.
What?
You just...don't compliment people that often.
What, d'ya want me to retract it? I'm just bein' courteous.

Oh, good, my body isn't burned.

What I'd give to have Elowen here.
I was thinking that. Disabling Shot and Trickery counter Smoke Bomb's debuff to a certain degree, and going before Gimle seems important for the fight. This battle seems tailor-made for a Survivalist, which is probably why the Story party doesn't have one.

This is a bad idea.
The heck are you doing it for, then?!
I don't know.

Phew.

...Sigrid needs to get her sword upgraded soon.

Bwah!
Who ate the sun?!
Fuckin' great.

No Therica Bs. Good job, Rea.
Always remember to CYA when you're not running a dedicated healer. Maybe even when you are.

...Well, that breakage couldn't have been better-timed.
Good job! I think! What'd she do? It sounded good!
Ever hear a tank scream in abject terror?

Well, even if 60% of our party is blinded, we could be doing worse.

Okay, it's not going to move, just face the right way...

Thanks, Siggy!
It was on this turn that I realized that Gimle being panicked would nullify the blind penalty.

Okay, we're getting near the end.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!
Urgh... Not this...again...
Fear me, strange red Byeah!
FUCK'S SAKE, MARIBELLE, WHO INVITED THIS BOOR TO THE PARTY?!
Goddamn it.

Oh, so that's...what Judith at her angriest...feels like...
OW.
Wrong tank, Jude.

Grk--!
Sigrid's poison takes off more than half her HP per turn. Great. Good.

Whatever, I don't really care about Gimle's speed.

Gah, my throat hurts...
So does mine...

Charging up...!
Boosted Thor Formula!! Here we go!

Mrgrgrgrgrgrgr!
Nice floor tanking.
Mrgr!
Pull her out already, Vince.
...

Gonna have to do better than that.

Okay, I guess that counts as "doing better..."
Honestly, a few people being reduced to HP that still isn't in the red is the best I can ask for from Random Shot.

Too bad about Sigrid, though.

Slow deaths are the worst ones...

...At least I won't suffer as much...
And now Judith's gonna die too. Great.

I'm not going down quietly...!

Real good use of time there, tank.

Geh...hah...

Finish it, you three...

Gladly!

The fuck happened while I was outta it?
The rest of the fight.
...Thanks.
Well, I got through it in the end. That's gotta count for something.
Hm. I feel like I'm forgetting something.

Gods a-fuckin'-bove. She's just sellin' one'a the cannons as a gun.
...You're gonna buy it, aren't you?
Only after I get some strength trainin'. No fuckin' way I can lift that thing.
I'm free for that if you've ever got the time. Except in two days. I've got plans then.
Oh, plans for what?
Getting reservations at the Bismarck.
'Scuse me? The Bismarck? The hell kinda fancy thing you got going on, Jude?
It's a secret.
Kuni-kuzushi (+130 ATK, +4 TEC, -2 AGI) is made from 1 Burnt Barrel (Gimle normal). Costs 22400 en.
Decent gun. I don't have much else to say, though.

And that's it for now! Next time: we go further into Lost Shinjuku.
Wait shit I forgot to make a Left 4 Dead joke noooo
ironically, this update was originally full of TF2 jokes before i decided that wasn't very funny on its own
