Yet that's exactly what he did. Since the dawn of the Adrestian Empire, House Vestra has served House Hresvelg as the emperor's right hand. My father spat on a legacy of loyalty and devotion that had lasted 1,100 years.
He conspired with the ministers to usurp power from the emperor. And Lady Edelgard...
In your father's defense, the emperor was attempting to take power from the Seven Houses. The emperor's reform was an attempt to concentrate power in the hands of the throne. The nobles...put a stop to that. Emperor Ionius lost the ensuing power struggle.
Now it is the nobles' turn to suffer defeat. Lady Edelgard will be emperor.

Why?
Come now. You have no need to be on guard. I'd never cause you harm. You're far too valuable a specim— Well, that is to say, too valuable a member of the academy staff. Indeed, the further my Crest research progresses, the closer you come to learning the truth of your heritage. Is it not so? When I learned you bore the lost Crest—the very Crest of Flames itself!—I set about learning everything I could about your past. What was the origin of your bloodline? How have the events of your life been shaped by your lineage? I became somewhat obsessed, I must admit.
You investigated me?
Nothing so crass as an investigation, no. I researched. I spoke to mercenaries whom you've worked with in the past to learn about your life before the academy.
Of course, I also contacted Jeralt and his mercenary friends. Your father does keep rather interesting company. I'm excited to share with you what I learned, but I do ask that you correct me if I am mistaken on any account. The story begins with Jeralt serving as captain of the Knights of Seiros... There was a woman at the monastery with whom Jeralt was quite close. At first, it seemed obvious this mystery woman was your mother. Alas, that cannot be the case. The timing is all wrong.

Yet your birth occurred sometime later, while Jeralt was taking work as a mercenary. This, of course, presumes your age is accurately reported. If you were born sooner, well, the story would be quite different, would it not?
My father was always one for secrets.
Oh, I am aware. You two were certainly enigmatic as far as mercenaries go. For example, Jeralt never once spoke of his time serving as captain of the knights. That's quite a secret to keep for all those years. In the end, your old acquaintances had little definitive to say about either of you. However, they all agreed on one thing—your father, and yourself, were a strong pair. Warriors to be respected and feared. You, in particular. In fact, many came to know you as the Ashen Demon. They say you would destroy your enemies without a hint of emotion on your face. The mercenaries I spoke to revered you as a living legend of sorts.
...
So, that is what I learned. And, I admit, it is barely more than I knew before. The next step in my research is to ask your blood for answers, and hope that it is more forthcoming than your past acquaintances.

That is a rather, ah, pointed question. But I do happen to have an answer for you. As the heir to House Gloucester, I am in search of a bride of suitable social status.
I'd think you could find plenty of suitable women even among the masses.
Do not be so certain. A lady who marries me must be prepared to enter noble society, whether she wishes to or not.
It is a complex web of etiquette and expectation. Not a world one could easily step into without the proper upbringing.
What's more, House Gloucester would hardly see much benefit were I to join myself to the household of a commoner.
Oh, I can imagine. Well, I suppose that means any friendship between you and I is doomed as well.
Isn't that a rather excessive conclusion?
You want someone to birth your house's next generation. I want someone to share my life with.
I'm not even an option in your eyes, and you're hardly viable in mine.

You have my gratitude. You will be rewarded for taking such a drastic measure.
To be clear, this is about your Crest, correct?
Your instincts are sharp. According to the Empire's records, I bear the Major Crest of Macuil.
But those records are mistaken. In point of fact, the Crest that I bear is—
The Major Crest of Noa, one of the lost saints. That bloodline was believed to have died out. No one, not even the Imperial nobility, bears that Crest. How, then, did you come by that bloodline? And how did you manage to thwart the Empire's investigations into the matter?
All of the answers you seek are tied to House Nuvelle's origins. Close to a thousand years ago, Saint Noa parted ways with Saint Seiros. She lived out her days in seclusion on what would become Nuvelle territory. Her children obscured their origins before serving the Empire. It wasn't long before they were ennobled. I suspect Saint Noa feared that revealing her Crest would only lead to tragedy.
So she passed it off as the Crest of Macuil, which already existed within the Empire...
Yes. Much like Saint Macuil, Saint Noa was known to be a masterful mage. Her magic ensured that any test would not reveal the true nature of her Crest. Otherwise, someone may have exploited our bloodline long ago.
Hmm... House Nuvelle was known for producing as few heirs as possible.

All of that effort was in order to conceal Noa's bloodline, wasn't it?
Yes, but it was a factor in our house's ultimate downfall.
Our priorities were, perhaps, not what they ought to have been. In sidestepping the internal strife within the Empire, we left ourselves open to the external threat posed by Dagda. With stronger blood ties to other houses, we might have had allies in our time of greatest need.
Interesting... I always had the inkling that the six noble houses were eager to see House Nuvelle fall.
Thank you for trusting me with this, Constance.

Do I...want to know what Edelgard meant by "pure" offspring?

Anyway, besides that, I find that scene interesting for stating that the Crest of Macuil exists within the Adrestian Empire. I suppose it shouldn't be that surprising, given that there are people with the crests of Cichol and Cethleann. I doubt Seteth had other children besides Flayn, and it's explicitly stated that Flayn never had children before falling into her deep slumber.

Still, it makes me wonder how the crests of the Four Saints managed to find their way into the general populace. Maybe it's like what happened with Wilhelm, the founder of the Adrestian Empire, where Rhea gave him her blood, hence why the Adrestian royal line bears the Crest of Seiros.

Man, I really have to do that update covering all of the stuff in both the monastery's library and the Shadow Library soon.

I threw nothing away, child. In fact, by stepping away from its trappings, in my heart, I feel closer than ever to the true meaning of nobility.
How so?
Consider this. At its inception, the concept of nobility assumed that the greatest among the populace would rise to power. In my mind, I believe that means those who value knowledge, those who strive for more, and wish to protect and guide their fellow man. However, in practice, nobility often serves to keep those deemed commoners down, segregated from those who, by chance, were born to a noble family. That is one of the reasons I decided to leave that nonsense behind, and dedicate myself to the study of Crests. Though I have abandoned my position, in my mind, it was to pursue what I consider to be a truly noble pursuit... That of knowledge.
I see. Well, you're definitely a noble in that sense of the word.
